Well-fitting chinos are a staple wardrobe item for any man, and they’re perfect for smart casual duties. They’re also incredibly easy for any guy to wear.
Whether you use chinos to break up a suit or pair with a simple polo shirt, their versatility in the modern menswear space is unrivaled. But since they’re such a popular choice for men of all shapes, finding brands that work for you can be a minefield.
When shopping for men’s chinos, here are three key things to look for:
Fit: Chinos usually come in slim, straight, and relaxed/wide fits, so choose based on your body type and style preference. If you have no idea, go straight. A slim or tailored fit offers a modern, sharp look, while a straight or relaxed fit provides a classic, comfortable option. You want a slight taper that isn’t too tight around the thigh and calves (baby cows) because that’s a very bad look.
Fabric Quality: Most chinos are made from 100% cotton or a cotton blend with some stretch (around 1-3% elastane). The fabric should fill feel soft and durable, while a bit of elastane adds comfort and shape retention.
Colour and Versatility: Choose versatile colours like khaki, navy, or olive, which can be dressed up with a blazer or down with a t-shirt. I like white chinos in Summer too.
Happy shopping.
Everlane
US retailer Everlane is committed to producing clothes in sustainable and ethical ways. Not only are the materials it uses of high-quality, but the company is also completely transparent about the factories it employs. A comprehensive selection of chinos comprises a range of fits and materials, including the ultra-lightweight Air Chino.
Editor’s note: “I wear Everlane as my every work pant. For the price, I think they’re the best chinos going around.”
Outerknown
Outerknown is the clothing brand created by world champion surfer Kelly Slater, founded with the intention to combine clothing reflective of surf culture but made in the most sustainable ways possible. The brand’s version of the chino pant is the S.E.A Legs, which are made from 98 per cent organic cotton. Throw in a range of colours and a supersoft feel and you’ll not only look good, but feel good about the benefits they bring to the planet.
Mott & Bow
Founded in 2013, Mott & Bow is a premium clothing brand who create elevated basics at affordable prices. The brand is mostly known for their extremely comfortable and well-made jeans, as founder Alejandro Chahin spent most of his life working with denim at his family’s denim manufacturing facility. However, Mott & Bow, also make high-quality relaxed chinos, tees, shirts, and sweaters.
Mott & Bow’s chinos are made from comfortable and stretchy fabric for a stylish fit that’s neither too tight or too loose in the right places. Plus, they’re versatile enough to wear on dressier occasions, as well as casual enough for the weekends. Durable, easy to care for, and affordable, Mott & Bow make some seriously impressive chinos.
Bonobos
Bonobos was born because founders, Andy Dunn & Brian Spaly, couldn’t find men’s pants that fit (they were either too tight or too boxy) and wanted to fix this common problem men face while shopping. They fixed it with their not-so-secret secret: all Bonobos’ pants have a curved waistband that conforms to the natural shape of men’s waists.
Therefore it’s safe to say that Bonobos produce some of the best, most comfortable chinos. Available in a wide variety of fits, styles, and awesome colours, you’ll look and feel good in any pair of Bonobos slim-fit chinos.
Rhone
Rhone is the kind of brand that nails that tricky balance between casual streetwear and gear you’d want to wear to the gym. Take their Commuter Pants, for example. It’s got the sort of sharp, tailored look that fits in just as well at the office as it does on a date night, but it’s also made from a lightweight, breathable fabric that keeps you comfortable all day. You could probably get away with a quick jog in them—maybe don’t go trying your luck with squats.
Ministry of Supply
Sustainable, carbon neutral, and stylish—Ministry of Supply’s got the trifecta sorted. They’re making high-quality men’s chinos that won’t break the bank but still pack in serious durability. These chinos are tested to withstand real life, so you can trust they won’t leave you with an unfortunate tear when you’re out and about.
Quince
Hailing from San Francisco, Quince knows a thing or two about modern professional style. With start-up companies and campuses at every turn, nailing the smart casual style is paramount. It’s with this in mind that you’ll find an extensive selection of chinos in a variety of fits and fabrics, but all with the common goal of offering comfort, durability and breathability. All the essential colours are present and correct, but the real selling point is the price, coming in well below its closest rivals yet offering similar, if not greater, quality. Sign us up.
Lululemon
Canadian athletic giant Lululemon is also one to cater to life away from fitness-based activities with a range of clothing for everyday wear.
That includes the Commission Pant, Lululemon’s take on the classic chino made from a proprietary Warpstreme fabric, designed to offer the ultimate in comfort and stretch chino. Hidden pockets keep the slim fit and, in the company’s words, they feature “anti-ball-crushing technology”, so every bit of you has room to breathe.
Flint & Tinder
Flint & Tinder is a clothing brand stocked exclusively by Huckberry. The online retailer only selects brands of the highest quality and those that produce their wares in sustainable ways.
Flint & Tinder, therefore, is the perfect fit. The brand makes its chinos in the US out of a lightweight, breathable fabric, meaning they could become the most comfortable pair of pants you’ve ever owned.
Todd Snyder
American fashion label Todd Snyder is one you want to add to your list of regular shopping destinations. Pieces, including chinos, are made from some of the finest materials – in the case of chinos, it’s Japanese selvedge – and offer an elevated sense of style some other brands find hard to replicate.
All the essential colours are covered, with some seasonal variations thrown in for good measure.
TS does come in on the more expensive side.
J. Crew
J. Crew is synonymous with US preppy culture and wouldn’t look out of place during a weekend trip to your family’s lake house. It’s perhaps no surprise to learn the US clothier has an extensive range of chinos, available in a number of different fits. All styles, however, benefit from the company’s Stretch On Demand fabric technology that provides extra flexibility only when you need it.
Uniqlo
If you don’t already know about Japanese brand Uniqlo, then we seriously recommend you add it to your list of go-to retailers. The company ticks off virtually all the menswear essentials and better yet, they’re all made to a seriously high quality that belies their price tags. Uniqlo’s chino range encompasses, skinny, slim and regular fits, all available in a number of colour choices. The company also offers a tailoring service to help you get the perfect fit.
Club Monaco
Canadian clothier Club Monaco is a brand that has become associated with urban style, and since its founding has been acquired by Ralph Lauren, which only cements it as being a brand of quality. The Connor chino has been designed to be a wardrobe staple all year, coming in a mid-weight cotton fabric to help regulate temperature, and with a hint of stretch to keep you moving freely.
Public Rec
We were sent some Public Rec clothes to try a few years ago. Their t-shirts were really impressive. Soft and comfortable, and they’ve lasted a good couple of years. We also received two pairs of navy chinos as part of the car package. It is a slim fit and has a slight stretch. They felt good on and were well made. Like they could work for work or a round of golf too.
Like the Lululemon pants, they have a slightly sporty feel to them, which is good if you want chinos to do more than work.
