Cate Blanchett knows how to deliver a strong fashion moment, and for the press night performance of The Seagull at The Barbican Theatre, she did just that—well, almost.
It seems Sarah Burton has officially completed her Infinity Gauntlet of fashion muses, having dressed Elle Fanning, Timothée Chalamet, and Anna Wintour in the lead-up to her Givenchy debut during Paris Fashion Week. Now, with Cate in the mix, it’s clear Burton’s Givenchy era is in full swing.
Cate’s custom Givenchy Fall 2025 ensemble was all about sharp, structured elegance. The strong-shouldered tailored all-in-one, cleverly gave the illusion of separates—an approach I absolutely love. But here’s where I hit pause. The trousers? A little too long. Instead of flowing seamlessly, they’re gathering, creating an uncharacteristic bunching effect down the legs.
Sarah Burton is known for her impeccable tailoring, so seeing a fit issue—especially on a custom piece—was surprising. Maybe it was a styling decision, but either way, I wish this had been finessed.
Despite the minor flaw, the overall look still had that Cate Blanchett power dressing energy. With black patent leather Givenchy pumps to complete the look, she once again proved she can make anything work—even when the fit isn’t quite working for her.
