Air Jordan 1 Origins: The Legacy of the ‘1’

Harking back to 1984, Michael Jordan stepped onto the court for the Chicago Bulls in a pair of sneakers that would change basketball and streetwear history forever – the Air Jordan 1. This icon was designed by Peter Moore and the OG came in a ‘Chicago’ colourway that nodded to MJ’s team colours.

Despite wearing the shoe only once, MJ didn’t switch back to the Air Jordan 1 until the latter part of the year. For Jordan, it was important to be able to feel the court underfoot and for the shoe to be comfortable to play in, which led Moore to choose an entirely leather construction. A Swoosh logo was emblazoned on the sneaker, crafted from supple leather for a premium touch, while the legendary Wings logo was the defining detail.

Released in the spring of 1985 the basketball shoe represented the pinnacle of innovative sneaker design that would soon become the road map of streetwear culture for years to come. Continually popular as a lifestyle trainer, the Air Jordan 1 has an extensive catalogue of colourways and collabs, making it perhaps the most sought-after silhouette of all time.
