I would not say Nightbitch is the Cocaine Bear of the fall, necessarily, but in terms of kicky titles and amusing elevator pitches — “Amy Adams is a mother who believes she turns into a dog” vs. “bear goes on coke-fueled killing spree” — they’re definitely in a similar ballpark. Right now, it seems like this might be Amy’s path back to awards season and possibly a way in for director Marielle Heller, although bear in mind that people said the same thing about Hustlers and J.Lo and Lorene Scafaria when it came out, and then that ground to a halt. Let’s cross our fingers and enjoy a handful of other highlights from the Toronto International Film Festival — so much happened this weekend that we might have to cover this across multiple days. ‘Tis a blessed month.
