Contour Sticks for Chubby Faces Application Tips

When it comes to having a chubby face, there is a common misconception that less is more. However, slathering on pounds of contour is not always the answer. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when applying contour.

  1. Placement matters!
    • With a round face, you can’t always follow the typical tutorial for slim-faced chicks. They may place their contour line in the center of their cheek, but as a chubby cheeked gal, you’ll want to place the contour higher — right on top of your cheek bone.
  2. Your cheeks and nose are not the only places that could use a little contour.
    • If you have super chubby cheeks or are rocking a double chin, you’ll want to add a line of contour to your jawline. This will help sharpen your jawline and distract from the double chin.
  3. Contour that forehead!
    • Have you ever looked back at old pictures and noticed a lot of light hitting your beautiful big forehead (or five-head)? Consider adding a little contour to it. Remember… sometimes less is more! Start with a couple lines near your hairline. If you find you need more, go back in with a few more lines.
  4. Blend your contour out with cream bronzer.
    • If you’re a person of color or have a deep skin tone, use a bronzer to blend out your contour. Most makeup routines will tell you to place the bronzer on top of your contour; however, when you dip your brush in cream bronzer before blending, it makes for a beautiful contour. Otherwise, you can end up with a sharp contour and fall into drag queen territory. Remember… opt for a cream bronzer instead of powder.

  5. Use a stippling brush to blend out contour.
    • It may seem like common sense to grab a powder or angled brush when it’s time to blend that contour. We suggest using a stippling brush instead! This is especially pertinent if you are using cream products. This tip can also apply to liquid and cream blush.
  6. Consider underpainting!
    • Those who are new to makeup often struggle with blending, but underpainting can ease those worries. The technique is pretty simple once you learn. You will do your concealing and contouring first, then add foundation later. See video below for a full tutorial from our editor!
