HOORAY, Cannes is here — welcome news for those of us missing a regular array of wild gowns on people we don’t totally recognize, and/or fancy ones on people we do. This year, the most recognizable-to-Americans people on the Cannes jury are probably Eva Green, Lily Gladstone, and jury president Greta Gerwig, who are joined by Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, French actor Omar Sy, Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona, Lebanese actor/director Nadine Labaki, and Turkish screenwriter Ebru Ceylan. (It’s always a very global jury, as it should be!)
Meryl Streep, deservedly, got an honorary Palme d’Or (presented by Juliette Binoche) at this opening ceremony, which was also a screening of  Lea Seydoux’s new film, Le Deuxième Acte. We’re kicking off coverage with the jury and honorees, but don’t worry — there are plenty of other gowns to come. Spoiler: SEQUINS.
