Mugler had a strong presence at the 2024 Academy Museum Gala, with three distinct celebrity interpretations of the iconic brand’s signature edge. From archive pulls to daring cuts, the fashion house certainly made a statement—though not all of it was successful.
A Corseted Comedy
Kim Kardashian stepped into the Thierry Mugler archives for a Haute Couture look that featured a corset, cape, and short shorts. While Mugler is known for pushing boundaries, this ensemble felt more like a Halloween costume than red-carpet couture. Between the PVC pumps, anklet worn under tights, and micro shorts, the outfit came off as trying way too hard. The stunning necklace and her return to natural hair were the few redeeming elements. Unfortunately, this look is more laughable than luxurious.
Mugler, But Barely There
Kylie Jenner opted for a vintage Mugler Spring 1998 Couture dress, and let’s be honest—she wore it better than the original runway model. As someone who usually isn’t a fan of visible underwear, I had to zoom in to check if she was even wearing a bra (she was). The fit was impeccable, but the gown’s upper portion veered dangerously close to being too revealing. The daring cut makes it quintessential Mugler, though perhaps it flirted a little too much with the edge.

Needs Polishing
Elizabeth Banks also went the Mugler route with a strapless dress that unfortunately needed a bit more grooming. The fit wasn’t as sharp as it could have been, and the overall styling didn’t quite land. However, her new Storm-inspired hair colour was a highlight, adding a fresh, bold touch to her look. Jimmy Choo Ixia pumps completed her look.
