Following her memorable appearance at the 2024 Met Gala, Da’Vine Joy Randolph returned to the red carpet for the Season 4 premiere of Hulu’s ‘Only Murders In The Building’ at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, California, joining Selena Gomez for an evening of glitz and glamour. Having seen Da’Vine in a variety of gowns throughout awards season, the anticipation was high for her to switch things up—and that’s exactly what she did. However, while her bold choice of this Mugler Fall 2024 strapless dress had the potential to be one of her standout looks of the year, it ultimately missed the mark.
Let’s start with the positives: Da’Vine’s decision to step out in a Mugler dress was a refreshing departure from the more conventional red carpet gowns we’ve seen her in this year. The strapless design and the idea behind the leather fringe detailing had all the makings of a fashion-forward moment. It was daring, it was different, and it was undeniably a risk—a risk that should have paid off, bringing a fresh, avant-garde energy to the red carpet.
But unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite match the ambition. It was a case of A for effort, but F for execution.
The dress, which should have been a masterpiece, fell short because it lacked the key elements needed to bring the design to life. The sparse leather fringe detailing left too much of the layer underneath exposed, breaking the visual continuity and diminishing the intended impact of the look. Where the skirt stops abruptly, it disrupts the overall flow of the dress, killing the illusion and leaving the ensemble feeling incomplete.
What could have been a striking, avant-garde moment ended up feeling a bit underwhelming. The design needed more of that leather fringe detailing to create a cohesive and dramatic effect. Without it, the look felt unfinished, as if it was missing a crucial element that would have tied everything together. The idea was there, but the execution lacked the finesse needed to make this dress a true showstopper.
This Mugler dress certainly aligns with Da’Vine adventurous spirit. However, even the most daring fashion risks need a solid foundation to stand on, and this dress simply didn’t have that. It’s disappointing because the potential for a high-fashion moment was clearly there. With a few tweaks—perhaps a bit more fringe, a better finish to the skirt, or a different approach to layering—this could have been a memorable red carpet win.
While this particular look may not have hit the high note we were hoping for, I still applaud Da’Vine for continuing to push the boundaries of red carpet fashion.
