Do You Make and Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions?

It’s that time again, fellow Curvy Fashionistas! As the year draws to a close, many of us start reflecting on what we’ve accomplished and where we want to grow. New Year’s resolutions often come to mind—promises to ourselves to make changes, build habits, or embrace new mindsets. But let’s pause for a moment and reflect: Do you actually make and keep your New Year’s resolutions?

The Science Behind New Year’s Resolutions

Before we dive into your stories, let’s explore what research says about resolutions. Studies show that making New Year’s resolutions can be effective. According to Proactive Change, individuals who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to achieve their goals than those who don’t. This statistic underscores the value of setting clear intentions—but it’s not the whole story.

Resolutions often fail when they’re overly ambitious or vague. This is where the idea of adopting a theme for the year comes into play. Instead of setting rigid goals, a theme offers a flexible, overarching guide for your actions. For example, a theme like “balance,” “expansion,” or “focus” can influence decisions across multiple areas of your life without the pressure of specific milestones.

Dr. John Norcross, a leading psychologist in behavior change, notes that success often comes down to creating small, sustainable changes and reinforcing them with supportive habits. A theme might make this process easier and less daunting, helping you stay on track throughout the year.

Revisiting Resolutions

In previous years, I’ve set my own resolutions—some of which I’ve nailed, while others… well, let’s just say they’ve rolled over into the next year. Revisiting past goals is an essential part of the process. Even if you didn’t achieve everything you set out to do, the act of setting resolutions reflects self-awareness and a desire for growth.

Take a moment to reflect on your own resolutions from last year. Did you achieve what you set out to? What worked, and what didn’t? Share your experiences in the comments below—we’d love to hear what helped you stay committed or where you may have stumbled.

Considering a Theme Instead

New Year's Theme- Instead of a ResolutionNew Year's Resolutions

If resolutions feel too rigid or overwhelming, why not try setting a theme for 2025? A theme can:

  • Provide focus without the pressure of specific outcomes.
  • Adapt to changes in your life throughout the year.
  • Encourage creativity in how you pursue personal growth.

For example, if you choose the theme “well-being,” it could influence how you approach fitness, nutrition, mental health, and even relationships. Every decision can be weighed against this guiding principle, offering direction without the rigidity of traditional resolutions.

The theme for TCF for 2025, is New Year, MORE You! My personal theme is “with Excellence.” As a Virgo who has a Libra stellium, I have learned that I tend to start a lot and never finish or get stuck in the throes of perfectionism. To help me be a bit more productive towards my goals, I am adopting a “with excellence” mindset.
