Fashion Inspo for Family Holiday Photos

In my house, the holiday season has officially begun! Our family likes to take holiday photos early to get a little more ahead on designing the holiday cards to send out to loved ones. We like to send our Christmas card right after Thanksgiving, which comes up quicker each year! Making sure all family members are coordinated with outfits and everything fits well takes a moment to figure out for sure. I’m here to help out with family pictures inspiration this year! We believe family holiday photos should be outfits you wear again and not just for the photo session. These photos last forever and it’s important to remember we are fully in charge of the process.

Here are some family outfit ideas and color palette options you can use for inspiration!

Essentials

Firstly, I always say a great option for beginning is to grab basic pieces and form your looks surrounding them. Call me old fashioned, but I have to start this process with a to-do list! Even if I have everything all figured out, it keeps me more organized to see it in front of me. From there I can actually check things off. I split it up between different ideas for the whole family.

For instance, I need to get a red dress for one of the kids, hire a professional photographer, grab different shades of eye shadow to try out for my look, etc. It ranges from things that need to be picked up at the store to physically getting myself organized with the items I have already. Family Christmas pajamas are not going to cut it here, we like to go all out for a timeless look! One piece can help a whole outfit come together so start with where you are comfortable.

Sticking with a Theme

Secondly, your color scheme typically runs the family photo shoot. It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we want to showcase that in our family portrait. There are so many different ways you can go here. For instance, we recommend festive colors like the traditional red, bright reds or Christmas sweaters are classic options for looks. Another idea is to take neutral tones and create a good time out of it! Last year, we stuck with creams and more neutral colors and decided to go a similar path this year on the neutral front. You can never go wrong with neutrals, they make outfit combination even easier. Mixing in different fabrics such as velvet and chunky sweaters can also add a lot to the photo, in small doses. Try creams or black for main colors if you want a more neutral option for holiday family photos.

From my experience, involving outdoor activities in the photos are the perfect winter accessory. Bring the family outside and make it look like you’re out on a walk, posed by a Christmas tree or your favorite places. Movement helps the images come to life and brings a lot to the images. Try giving yourself different options as your backdrop that go well with your outfits! If you’re sticking with versatile tones over green plaids, these tend to be more wearable throughout the year and make sense seasonally. You can never go wrong here, you know some of my favorite options have been brighter colors.

Putting it Together

Finally,  you got this, try to stay out of your head! This is one of those things that feels overwhelming and like a lot of work and while it does involve a to of planning, you will feel so much better once it’s completed. Sit down, make that list for family Christmas photo outfits and get to shopping! I’ve created a few collages for you to pull inspiration from that I’ll insert below along with links to where everything is from! A few places I like to shop from are Anthropologie, Nordstrom, Old Navy, J.Crew and LoveShackFancy. This time of year is so special and I hope I can bring a little bit of peace and organization to anyone who might need it. Let me know what you are doing for your holiday photos this year! Happy Holidays!
