Fugs and Pieces, July 19th, 2024

Happy Friday! It has, once again, been a….truly wild week to be alive in the world — I hope yours was as good as it could be. (And your computer systems are working??)

At Drinks With Broads, we covered a lot of ground! We have a fresh recap of The Bear for you.  We looked at Bennifer’s house, currently for sale, and talked about prequels. We also watched A Family Affair and The Idea of You, and discovered that you can retire AND get married at Taco Bell, plus found a very notable villa and recommend some new Pringles.

Here at GFY, we said goodbye to Shannen Doherty.

On a lighter note, I also rounded up some good stuff from the Nordstrom sale, and we chatted about ambitious meals AND what you’re recommending to everyone now!

Elsewhere:

Lainey brings you a lot of Manny Jacinto news and info and also cheekbones and smartness.

I also really liked Lainey’s piece about Shannen Doherty.

RIP, Bob Newhart! He had a truly great run. I also was literally just talking about The Bob Newhart Show yesterday — it holds up! (It’s streaming on Prime) [Variety]

At the LA Times: I spent 4 hours and 20 minutes in the state fair’s new weed lounge. Here’s how it went.

Variety reports: “Ryan Reynolds Says ‘I Let Go of Getting Paid’ on ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Took the Little Salary I Had Left’ to Pay for the Screenwriters to Be on Set.”

This is an interesting and sobering piece at The Cut about breast cancer screening, and how the MRI is useful (and should perhaps be the gold standard) if you have dense breasts. This is timely — I have dense breasts (or did, as of my last mammogram they’re not officially dense anymore? Apparently you can de-dense with age) and a family history, and just scheduled my own annual screening MRI. (As a warning, if you have health anxiety, this will not help.)

Also fun at the NYT: Readers Pick Their 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. I’d read 18 on the other list; I’ve read 25 of these. As I said on Instagram last week, they should let you count the ones you’ve bought if not technically read. [gifted link]
