Here’s to the end of a short week! Hope yours went well, and that you’re keeping cool. It is HOT in California at the moment; it’s meant to hit 107 degrees here today.
At Drinks With Broads this week, you got a fresh new Only Murders in the Building recap, and on Thursday, we explored the summer bestsellers of the 1950s, the most bonkers looks of last season of Selling Sunset, and were mad for/about the finale of The Bachelorette. Those were all for paid subscribers; there was no free Tuesday newsletter this week due to the holiday. (Another perk of joining the paid tier!)
This week, we also introduced Democracy With Broads, and I’m happy to finally mention it here as well:
After we featured Sarah Jessica Parker’s States Project bag on GFY, the group reached out to see if we’d be interested in starting our own giving circle. The States Project is founded on the idea that our presidential candidates will do just fine with fundraising and don’t really need the average person’s help; our precious donor dollars can have a more measurable impact on smaller legislature races in swing states, and/or states that might be effectively putting issues like abortion on their ballots. All donated proceeds go to races the States Project have identified in a given region.
We figured: Why not? And thus, Democracy With Broads was born. We set sort of a wide target because we couldn’t decide which of those states needed the most help, and didn’t set a donation ceiling because we don’t want to put any pressure on anyone to do more than they comfortably can. It just felt nice to set something up that might contribute, even in a small way, to electing a stable of strong up-and-coming candidates who care about the health of the country and the people who live in it. ALL the people. If you like this idea but would prefer to donate to something MORE targeted, here is Sarah Jessica Parker’s group (which she runs with J. Smith Cameron!), and here’s one for Forever 35, and… well, here’s a list of a bunch.
Our fundraising focuses on the following swing states: Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Pennsylvania. You can read more about it, or donate if you feel so moved, here. (Make sure you’re registered to vote, while you’re at it!)
We had a great chat this week about our goals and plans for autumn.
