Gemma Chan is back on the promo circuit, and honestly, that alone is enough to get me excited. This time, she’s stepping into a darker role in The Actor, and with that, we’re seeing a new direction in her red carpet style. At the New York premiere, she opted for a Khaite Spring 2025 ensemble that’s decidedly more directional than the polished, sleek glamour we usually associate with her.
I know some of you are looking and this and saying. “Absolutely not.” And you know what? I hear you.
This isn’t the usual Gemma Chan elegance—there’s no perfectly draped gown or structured tailoring here. Instead, we have oversized proportions, a billowing silhouette, and an overall undone energy. And while I appreciate the shift in aesthetic to align with the moodier tone of the film, I can’t help but feel that the execution missed the mark.
Yes, it’s supposed to be oversized. But there’s oversized, and then there’s drowning in fabric. And unfortunately, this leans towards the latter. The volume from the waist down just completely overwhelms her, swallowing up the effortless cool that Khaite often delivers.
It’s an interesting direction, and I applaud her for trying something different. But in the battle of Gemma vs. the outfit, I fear the outfit might have won this round.
Cartier jewels completed her look.
