It’s been announced that it is supposed to be even more of a warmer summer this season. Hair health is at the heart of taking care of a frizzy appearance. Summer heat can be a tough battle. Luckily, there are anti-frizz and humidity fighting products available for the season. I’ve tried out what seems to be everything under the sun! The first step is understanding frizz. Where does it come from? Would you believe me if I told you it was from your hair not being able to hold and maintain moisture? Summers can get dry, so our hair seeks out the moisture from the humid air in an attempt keep the strands from being so dry. It sounds crazy, but adding moisture back into our hair through products can be extremely helpful. If you have curly hair, you are more prone to frizz because curly hair is more dry than straight or fine hair strands. Your hair shaft porosity will have a lot to do with this as well. Hair products such as a moisturizing shampoo, a hydrating shampoo, a hydrating conditioner and heat protectant when using hot tools are both a great start to humidity resistance! This summer, a leave-in conditioner and hair serum will be your very best friends for the humid weather.

Secondly, this is the most important step! We can’t properly care for your hair if we don’t know what hair type you have. For instance, the curly girls will need to add more moisture back into their strands than those with straight hair, because curly hair tends to dry out quicker than straight or wavy hair. Hair is not untamable, we can all find the perfect products for our natural hair in the summers. Everyone has a bad hair day but there’s nothing we can’t do to get some extra moisture in your hair’s cuticle and tackle the frizz. Furthermore, one other thing to pay attention to is the porosity of your hair cuticle. An easy way to test this is to take a few strands from your hair brush and drop them into a glass of water. If they float, you have low porosity, and if they sink you have high porosity. And of course, if it’s in the middle, it’s medium. Hair is like skin that way.

Finding the right products for our hair porosity will be a game changer, not just for the summer, but all year round. It’s all about how much water your hair is capable of holding onto. You’ll want to shop for products based on your hair type and porosity to ensure you’re getting the amount of moisture and benefits possible. Embrace your wavy texture or rock a straight style with no fear in humid conditions with our favorite hair products.

Moreover, a hair mask can do wonders for your hair. Humidity levels make dry hair feel like dull hair so you will need more than just a deep conditioner to tame frizz. The best way to get the most use out of a mask is to sleep in it, but if you don’t have time, an hour will certainly do! If you want to try a keratin treatment, those are really great because they act like an anti-frizz formula on any type of hair to give you a smooth texture. There are water molecules in the air that cause the frizz, so no matter what you do, you will need thermal protection. Yes, you do need it from the sun! Heat protectant and oil daily if you are outside will be a helpful tip. Just keep it away from your roots so your hair doesn’t go greasy!

Finally, hydration is the biggest factor here. It is going to be the key to maintaining healthy and frizz-free strands this summer. You can think you have the most hydrated strands, but the frizz is a sign of dehydration in your hair. Counteract it with oils! A few of my favorite hair oils are avocado oil, argan oil or a natural oil like olive oil. You will get smooth hair with consistency in hair oiling. Something I like to do is alternate oiling nights by oiling ears down every other night and sleeping in it. I’ll include a few of my favorite oils below, but I promise, you will become obsessed with how your hair reacts to oil! Don’t underestimate the power of sleeping on a silk pillowcase, too! It’s great not just for your hair but your skin as well.
