On the fourth and final day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris took to the stage to formally accept her party’s nomination for president. As she stepped into the spotlight, Kamala may have switched to a more traditional navy suit to mark the occasion, but she stayed loyal to the label that has become a recent favourite of hers: Chloé. Complementing the suit with a tonal lavaliere blouse, her look was one of understated elegance and professionalism.
While it’s clear that Kamala doesn’t want to be labeled a fashion icon, we can’t ignore the fact that what she wears carries significant weight. Every choice she makes is scrutinised, not just for its aesthetics, but for what it symbolises about her values, her identity, and her vision for America. And while her fashion choices may not be the focal point of her campaign, they are still a crucial part of the narrative she is crafting.
I’ll admit, I’m a bit surprised by her choice of Chloé. Many of us might have expected her to champion American designers like Sergio Hudson, known for his bold tailoring and vibrant colours, or Calvin Klein, a brand on the cusp of a major comeback. These labels could easily align with her identity as a historic American political figure. However, Chloé is providing her with exactly what she needs: a sense of refinement, elegance, and a touch of international sophistication that transcends borders.
In choosing Chloé, Kamala is subtly making a statement. The French label, known for its feminine yet powerful designs, mirrors her own persona—one that blends strength with grace, power with approachability. It’s a choice that speaks to her desire to be seen as a leader who is both relatable and authoritative. The navy suit offered a sense of formality appropriate for the gravity of the moment while maintaining her personal style.
The addition of a tonal lavaliere blouse kept the look cohesive and added a touch of softness to the tailored suit, reinforcing her message of unity and collaboration—key themes of her campaign. The ensemble, overall, was a masterclass in balancing tradition with modernity, professionalism with personal style.
Kerry Washington appeared onstage in a crochet Santicler white top and pencil skirt as she spoke alongside Kamala Harris’ grandnieces, Amara Ajagu and Leila Ajagu.
Kerry’s choice of a classic yet contemporary outfit complemented the tone of the evening—respectful of the occasion while also infusing it with a modern sensibility. Her nude pumps, though perhaps not my first choice, did not distract from the outfit and allowed the focus to remain on her powerful presence and words.
