New Balance 8040 Great Plains U8040UOD

New Balance isn’t afraid to test the boundaries of its most popular models. While you’re in the minority if you haven’t come across the polarizing 1906 loafer yet, the Boston brand has been rolling out an equally ambitious spinoff that you might not have heard of.

First unveiled in April of 2024, the New Balance 8040 is a strapped-up sandal version of the trending New Balance 9060 lifestyle shoe. Only a handful of colorways have released thus far, and while the New Balance 1906L has proven hard to cop at retail, the 8040 hasn’t come close to replicating that level of consumer interest (most colorways can be found on sale).

The New Balance 8040 features the same stability trainer sole as the 9060, but the upper is totally different. Pigskin suede makes up the entire base, save for a synthetic guard over the toe. This “Great Plains” colorway is the third monotone style we’ve seen thus far, arriving on the heels of dark brown and navy colorways last year.

The 8040 might not be for everyone, but if you’re a fan, the “Great Plains” colorway is due out Spring/Summer 2025 for $120. See official images below if you’re budgeting for a pair.
