MTV EMAs veteran Rita Ora is the host of this year’s event held at Manchester’s Co-op Live, where the singer arrived in a Ashi Studio Fall 2024 Couture gown that made an unforgettable statement on the red carpet.
Her choice was unconventional and boundary-pushing, featuring intricate horsehair wefts embroidered onto both the metal-frame corset and the voluminous organza skirt—creating a bold, innovative look that set the fashion bar high.
Rita’s gown recalls Cate Blanchett’s Fiorucci top adorned with hair wefts, which she wore to the ‘Rumours’ premiere at the New York Film Festival in September. Yet, unlike Cate’s more streamlined approach, Rita’s gown is far more elaborate with the horsehair wefts embroidered upside-down creating an eye-catching drape effect, adding volume that commands attention. It’s a clever design, layering elements in a way that amplifies the gown’s overall shape and silhouette.
But the use of hair wefts is likely to be polarising. While some may embrace it as avant-garde couture, others may find it too much, particularly given the mixed response Cate’s look received. Her Fiorucci ensemble was bold, but Rita’s is a whole new level of daring, taking the trend to its most extravagant iteration.
Personally, I’m all in for this adventurous take. After last year’s EMAs failing to deliver a single notable moment, it is refreshing to see Rita taking a risk and ensuring that the EMAs are back on the fashion map.
