If you’re a sports fan who is taking a trip to the States, then you owe it to yourself to take the time to see at least one live game or event, if you can. The passion of sports fans reaches across the globe, but there’s no denying that Americans do have a tendency to do things a lot bigger. Here are some of the leagues and events you should take a look at.
The NFLÂ
There are few sports that get the local fans quite as riled up as the NFL. American football is one of the hardest-hitting contact sports in the world, combining brute strength with the jaw-dropping athleticism of running the length of a football field and the strategy that plays out over the long-term phases of each and every game. While reminiscent of rugby in a lot of ways, American football does strike as a more brutal game which, in turn, can make it all the more thrilling for the fans.
The NBAÂ
Another massively popular sport, basketball is better suited to those who might prefer something a lot more fast-paced and explosive than football. Scores can change quickly in this game, where a mixture of breath-stopping throws from half-court and impressively technical hand movements can keep you on the edge of your seat. Arenas also tend to be smaller, allowing a better view of the action, which can be particularly entertaining when the halftime shows roll around with the cheerleaders coming out to perform.Â
The WNBAÂ
Women’s sports have been gaining more interest recently, with the standout example being that of the women’s basketball league, the WNBA. With increased investment as of late, and more media coverage and support, the quality of the play has been increasing rapidly lately. It also helps that it tends to be more affordable than attending an NBA game. The sport has recently been developing a few of its own celebrity names, too, with players like Sue Bird standing out as peak examples of athleticism across all sports.Â
The MLBÂ
America’s pastime, as it is often known, might be the sport most readily familiar to UK fans, with its resemblance to cricket, but there’s plenty to set it apart. There are legendary ballparks across the country, like Fenway Park in Boston, but if you’re able to see any team, you might want to check the LA Dodgers, as their current designated hitter, Shohei Ohtani, is widely becoming considered one of the best players to ever grace the game. It’s not very often you get to live in the same generation as someone who is set to define the highest standards of the game for years to come, so it’s worth taking the time to catch, by all means.
The NHLÂ
If you’re looking for pure thrills, then there are few feelings quite like being at the rinkside for a hockey match. Not quite as massively expensive as other sports, as you can see from the example of current New York Rangers tickets price, smaller venues allow for a closer view of the action. With the high-speed blading, rocketing puck shots, and the occasional dust-up on the ice, it’s one of the most spectacle filed sports in the country, that’s for sure.Â
A Boxing MatchÂ
We might have boxing matches over here, but the atmosphere simply does not compare to some of the biggest and most storied venues in the history of the sport, like the MGM Grand. It’s not always easy to get tickets, especially to big fights, which tend to be major celebrity events, but if you’re able, it can make for a truly electric night. The spectacle has been heightened with the rise of celebrity boxers, such as Jake Paul, as well.Â
The WWEÂ
While you may question how much professional wrestling can be considered a true sport, when it comes to sheer athleticism, there’s no denying that many of the performers are at the top of their game. Timing your visit up with one of the big pay-per-views, be it Summer Slam, the Royal Rumble, or Wrestlemania gives you the best chance of seeing some of the biggest names in the biz, like Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, and Asuka.
Take the time to look at the sports tickets for local events whenever you’re planning a trip. Being amongst those crowds and that excitement, experiencing a new sport live for the first time could easily make for one of the highlights of the trip.
